报告简介:
In materials with complex chemistry, even a small concentration of defects may lead to a heterogeneous mesostructure and properties that differ from what is expected based on the material's nominal crystal structure. One intriguing outcome of this complexity is the emergence of properties forbidden by the material's nominal, average symmetry. In this talk, I will discuss doped CeO2, along with hybrid, ortganommetalic halide perovskites. Although compositionally simple, doped CeO2 exhibits a complex defect structure that can be manipulated by external electrical and mechanical fields, resulting in symmetry-forbidden electrical polarity and electro-chemo-thermo-mechanical coupling. Similar effects appear in hybrid perosvkites with addition of photo-mechanical effects.

Dragan Damjanovic earned a BSc diploma in Physics from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Sarajevo in 1980 and a PhD in Ceramics Science from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, Pennsylvania State University (PSU) in 1987. From 1988 to 1991, he worked as a research associate at the Materials Research Laboratory at PSU. In 1991, he joined the Ceramics Laboratory in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). During his time there, he led the Group for Ferroelectrics and Functional Oxides at the Institute of Materials, and taught undergraduate and graduate courses on the structure and electrical properties of materials. His research focused on fundamental and applied investigations of the piezoelectric, ferroelectric, and dielectric properties of a wide range of materials. He retired from EPFL in March 2022.
